I've always loved working with Joomla, and formerly Mambo. But one of the things that I've always disliked is manipulating templates. There are a plethora of templates avaialable, but none seem to cover all of the bases. I always seem to need more module positions than are available, or there are CSS issues that need to be resolved, or they're not coded to standards.
The Variable Template and Component aims to resolve these issues.
Rather than provide a static layout, static CSS, or static module positions, Variable allows the developer to define layouts, module positions, access and menuitem restrictions and to generate output that conforms to the level of compliance they're interested in achieving.
The first site to receive an implementation will be RicheyWeb.com and upon successful testing the application will be made available in the Joomla Extension Directory.
1-25-10, the application is around 85% complete.
5-14-10, I've rewritten a significant portion to utilize plugins for some of the more mundane tasks - in preparation for Joomla 1.6. I'm hoping to release Variable for 1.5 and 1.6 shortly after the release of Joomla 1.6. ScriptsDown and ByeByeGenerator are some of the functionality found in Variable.
Stay Tuned!
