# The Day Job and the Commute

![The Day Job and the Commute](https://cdn.richeyweb.com/images/articles/facepalm.avif) The SaaS business I ran for nearly two decades shut down earlier this year. That was the plan for a while. It just arrived faster than I wanted once the [hosting](/test-article "Shader BG Test") and the remaining client work wrapped up. Running your own company for that long is a particular kind of [freedom](/blog/development/gpc-dnt-do-not-tracks-toothless-twin "GPC: DNT/Do Not Track’s Toothless Twin"). It is also a particular kind of constraint. When it ended, I needed a regular paycheck, so I got one...with a hefty commute.

I now work as the senior full-stack developer at [GrabAGun.com](https://grabagun.com). The people are good, the work is interesting, and the place is solid. I have exactly one complaint about the job: the commute.

## 3-4 Hours of Daily Commute

On a good day the commute to Dallas (near the Galleria) is an hour and a quarter each way. On a bad day it stretches past two hours. Most days land somewhere in between. Add that up and an average day away from home is about twelve hours. I leave before the house is fully awake and get back with roughly two hours before I need to eat and go to bed if I want to be functional the next morning. That window is dinner, a quick shower, and whatever small household thing cannot wait until the weekend. It is not a window for writing code.

Weekends are spoken for as well. Property maintenance, vehicle maintenance, household chores, and time with my family fill most of them. Today is one of the rare stretches where I have a few hours that are not already claimed. It is raining, so the outside work is postponed, and that is the only reason this post exists.

## I'm Still Here

The [software](/blog/development/bug-reports-a-developers-best-friend-not-a-burden "Bug Reports: A Developer's Best Friend, Not a Burden") on this site is still [free](/blog/development/new-geoip-coming-soon "New GeoIP Coming Soon"), still available, and still running on sites around the world. That has not changed. What has changed is how much time I can give it. [Updates](/blog/personal/pre-configured-client-extension-inspired-by-sap "Pre-Configured Client Extension Inspired by SAP") will be slower. Support responses will take longer. New work will happen when it happens, mostly in the gaps rather than on any predictable schedule. I am not abandoning the projects. I am simply no longer in a position where I can treat them as a second job.

If you are using any of the [extensions](/blog/development/generator-tag-claim-your-joomla-sites "Generator Tag: Claim Your Joomla Sites") or [tools](/blog/development/one-sh-tty-email-that-made-me-finally-do-something-about-spam "One Sh*tty Email That Made Me Finally Do Something About Spam"), thank you. They continue to exist because people keep using them. I will keep them working as best I can with the time that remains. When something needs attention and I have the hours, I will get to it. That is the current reality, and it is better to say it plainly than to let the silence do the explaining.
