ByeByeGenerator 1.12

Overview

Joomla itself offers a method to remove the generator tag from HTML pages, but not RSS or ATOM feeds.  ByeByeGenerator resolves this discrepancy.

Configuration

Plugin

The plugin has only one configuration tab.  All available options are found here.

  • Generator: default "Remove"
    • Options are: Custom, Remove, Do Nothing
  • Custom: default "PLG_SYS_BYEBYEGENERATOR_CUSTOM_DEFAULT"
    • If altering tag (Custom), change this field to the value you want represented in the generator tag
  • Robots: default "Keep"
    • If you want the robots tag removed, set this value to "Remove"

HELP

  • This plugin is so simple, there have never been any requests for help.  If it's not working, it probably isn't enabled.

Thanks for this plugin. When I installed the default Robots setting was 'Remove'. Can you check this? Because I think that would mean for Google, etc, to NOT index the site.

The robots meta tag, if not present is assumed to be "index", so by removing it - you're telling the search engines "go for it"

This is a decent primer on the robots meta tag.

As far as it being enabled by default, that doesn't sound right.....but I just checked and you're right! That's my mistake. I'll release a new version with that value set default off.

Thanks for your reply. I am still confused. I want my website to be indexed. Do I set the robots tag to 'Keep' or 'Remove'? You should have very clear descriptions to eliminate confusion. For instance, for Keep - "Robots will index your site". For Remove - "Robots will not index your site." Or vice versa.

I think you may be confusing the robots meta tag with the robots.txt file.

The meta tag is within each page of your website, and tells the robots what they're allowed to do with the content. index or no-index - along with a few other options.

The robots.txt file tells the robots which areas of your site they should or should not search.

And not having a robots.txt file will only slow the search engines down by not showing them where the starting points are. They'll index you, but slower. Joomla provides a default robots.txt file which will kickstart indexing by bots, but isn't optimized for your site....

Hi Michael,

For now I have disabled ByeByeGenerator. I am still unsure what to do with the Robots setting, as you have not clarified what it means. To me, this is a potentially dangerous setting because if you choose whatever option that disables search engines from indexing your site, then you could lose money.
