Miscellaneous Information

I'm a software engineer and problem solver with 20+ years building production systems that people actually depend on. I don't build prototypes — I build things that run in mission-critical environments, handle edge cases, and hold up over time.
My work spans enterprise LMS platforms, GDPR/CCPA compliance infrastructure deployed across 16,000+ sites, a proof-of-work CAPTCHA system that predated Google's invisible reCAPTCHA by three years, and AI content delivery tooling I shipped nine days before Cloudflare announced the same idea. I tend to see problems early.
I work across the full stack — PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, Linux, networking, APIs — because I've never had the luxury of only knowing one layer, and understanding the whole system is what makes the solutions work.
What drives me
I solve problems. That's not a mission statement — it's just the most accurate description of what I do and why I get up in the morning.
The problems don't have to be related. I've spent 20+ years solving software engineering challenges at the enterprise level, but I've also picked up computer forensics, amateur radio, firearms instruction, and open water diving along the way — not because they're resume padding, but because each one presented a system to understand and a skill to acquire. I find that genuinely interesting.
The thread connecting all of it is simple: I'd rather figure something out than be handed the answer. That instinct is what built my privacy compliance suite before regulators started enforcing GDPR in earnest, what produced a CAPTCHA system three years before Google's equivalent, and what had me shipping AI content tooling days before Cloudflare even announced theirs.
I'm not trying to be first. I'm trying to understand the problem deeply enough that the solution becomes obvious — and then build it right. That desire to build lasting solutions is why RFC research is a standard step in my process. Standards exist because smarter people than me already solved the interoperability problem — ignoring them is how you build something that works today and breaks tomorrow.

They say "jack of all trades, master of none" — but that's only half the quote. The full version ends "though oftentimes better than master of one." I've always thought the people who dropped the second half were specialists trying to protect their turf.
The range of skills and certifications isn't accidental. I operate on a simple principle inherited from years in the Boy Scouts: Be Prepared. Not as a platitude — as a genuine commitment to being capable. If a problem is worth solving, it's worth understanding deeply enough to solve it properly, with the right tools, built on solid foundations. That mindset shows up in my software the same way it shows up everywhere else in my life.
A note on DeVry
I attended DeVry on a CIS track in the early 90s, before the school's reputation declined. The curriculum wasn't hard — I spent most of my time tutoring classmates in exchange for food and gas money. What I got out of it was how to learn a programming language and some foundational software design principles. The other 20+ years I figured out myself. Please don't hold the affiliation against me.
Personal Projects
Carry Texas
A resource and training platform for individuals pursuing Texas security and LTC licensing. Combines my background in software development with my licensure as a certified firearms and classroom instructor.
